Engelberg- Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis is the highest peak of the mountain range situated in the north of Susten Pass, between the Bernese Oberland and central Switzerland. The geographic centre of Switzerland is located about 15 kilometres from west of the mountain.

Switzerland. get natural. Europe's highest suspension bridge is stretched on Mount Titlis at 3020 m. The Bridge in the canton Obwalden is about 100 meters long.

Schweiz. ganz natuerlich. Auf dem Titlis, oberhalb Engelberg im Kanton Obwalden, ist die auf 3020 m Hoehe die hoechstgelegenste Haengebruecke Europas gespannt. Die Bruecke ist ueber 100 Meter lang und spannt sich vom Suedwandfenster der Gipfelstation bis zur Bergstation des Gletscher-Sesselbahn Ice Flyer.

The breathtaking panoramic views at the summit are those of the fascinating restaurants with sun terraces, the Glacier Cave, "Titlis cliff Walk"-the highest suspension footbridge in Europe and snow-covered peaks. On the glacier, chairlift “Ice Flyer” fly over the Titlis glacier to Glacier Park.

Culture and history info

In 1435, the mountain was referred to as Tuttelsberg (Tutilos Mountain) in a document, possibly referring to a farmer named Tutilos. The name thus evolved from Tutilos Berg to Titlisberg and finally to Titlis. The nearest western neighbours to the mountain are Reissend Nollen and the Wendenstöcke which are slightly lower than Titlis but with sharp and rugged peaks. The first ascent of Titlis was probably made in 1739 by Ignaz Hess, J. E. Waser and two others. However, the first written evidence as per the Engelberger Dokumente is of a four man party reaching the summit in 1744. Joseph Kuster and Willi Amrhein made the first ski ascent of Titlis on 21 January 1904 and the 1st cable car was inaugurated in 1967. Klein Titlis hosts a significant telecommunications site for high-capacity point-to-point microwave radio links and VHF / UHF repeaters. The licensed radio links in the frequency band are regulated by the Swiss Federal Office of Communications.
