Culture and history info

Brussels was a settlement in prehistoric times and became a noteworthy settlement after St. Gary built a chapel on the banks of the Seine in the year 695, now called Place Saint Gery. The city of Brussels was officially founded in 979 AD by Charles; The Duke of Low Lotharingia, who enacted Brussels’ first town charter. Since then the town has been witness to many rulers, renaissances and revolutions, the 20th century was a period of war and development, after World War I and II, Germany occupied the city on both occasions. The Brussels Pact in 1948 led to the initiation of the Western European defence cooperation.

The first metro lines were built in the 1960s to ease urban congestion. During the 70s through the 80s further political reform created the Brussels Capital Region, expanding the City of Brussels to an urban agglomeration with a population of over 1 million. Being the capital of Europe; something is always happening in the town. Whether you’re looking for a music festival, chocolate event or film festival, the city has a powerful cultural agenda for visitors coming to the European capital. The European Union Headquarters, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and about 1,400 international NGOs and multinational corporations have set up their headquarters here.
